A message from Dragan about the transition period
Mon Nov 3, 07:55 AM
by Kristen Westesen
Hi all skiers and parents,
We just finished one big stage of our year round training. Some of you worked very hard, some hard but not consistently, and some of you did high school sports. Coaches provided best possible training that we could have. This coming week we will be able to see progress you made through lab testing and time trail for J1/OJ, and time trail for the J2 and younger. I expect good and motivational results.
We are entering transition period where we will have couple of goals to accomplish. Main goal would be for us to maintain fitness, skill, power and strength we gained so far. Another goal would be for us to make good transition from dry land training to on snow training. This is important period where we need to be passionate and consistent. Weather during this period is unpredictable, and that is going to dictate our training and workouts. If we get some snow early we will try to use that advantage, but still do enough dryland training. If we do not get early snow we will do training that will be optimal in those conditions. Here I would like to ask all of you for your cooperation. Racing season for older skiers will start at the end of this month. Coaches will do their best to prepare skiers for early season racing. We will do our best to accommodate best possible racing schedule for those who did regular training and those who did school sports. Number of races we do in November and December will depend of the readiness of skiers, techniques and distance preferences. J2 group will have their racing season start in December with some local races, and we are using those races as a preparation for the main race season in January, February, and March.
J3, J4, J5 will go through this process slowly through broad spectrum of activities, where they will improve basic and specific abilities appropriate to their age. Competition for this group is secondary goal. They will have lots of time to compete in their later development.

IMD licenses
Tue Jan 15, 09:12 AM
by Kristen Westesen
Many of you probably already found this, but Kristina Casey (IMD treasurer) has posted a list of the IMD licensed skiers on the Intermountain website. To see if your skier’s licensing has gone through, go to: intermointainxc.com/competitit1.htm and look for their name on the list. If you do not see the name, you must contact Kristina directly (her email is on the IMD website). Skiers must have an IMD license before they race in order for their points to count toward qualifying for Junior Nationals.

US Nationals Update, skate race - Ben Westesen
Wed Jan 2, 06:26 PM
by Timothy M. Weston
Emotions ran on high today as one by one competitors left it all on the 5km (for women) or 10km (2 laps for men) course. The women started bright and early and were presented with cold, hard packed conditions which, along with Floyd’s genius waxing job, made for very fast skiing and fast skis for nearly everyone today. The women were faced with the challenge of a relatively short, fast paced one lap which resulted in ridiculously fast times for all. Everyone was forced into using the “bat outta hell” technique hammer out the course, fighting for every second. When reviewing the results one could observe that a mere two seconds could mean a drop of 10 places down the list. Despite the annonamous BSF skier’s comment “BSF has now gotten all our bad races out of the way….,” all our female competitors raced extremely well and were resulted with excellent results.
The men, who started between the hours of 1 and 3 in the afternoon, were faced with a completely different challenge. It had begun to snow towards the end of the womens’ race and had continued to dump for the remainder of the day and by the time most of our male competitors took off out of the starting gate, a good four inches had accumulated on the course. The wind had also picked up resulting in a brutal lapping and finishing stretch and poor visibility. The men all battled their way through two grueling laps in the ever-worsening conditions which turned the already challenging course into a pure “guts race.” All the men fought hard for every second today, tried their best, and despite could-be degrading comments made by Dragan, everyone left the venue in high spirits- for we had a national champion among us. Leif Zimmerman freakin’ Killed It. Today was tough for all, but it left everyone in good moods and excited to compete again on Thursday in the classic races. Stay tuned for more BSF updates.

Katie Gill Senior Nationals update - day 2, training
Sun Dec 30, 08:00 PM
by Timothy M. Weston
Hello there parental units and fellow skiers,
This is the ski posse reporting live from beautiful downtown Houghton, Michigan. Today we woke up at approximately 8:45, and started the day with a short run and stretching. Believe me there is nothing like this historical town. Breakfast is quite enjoyable; it includes waffles, hard boiled eggs, and cereals. Yummy!! Today we also had the pleasure of skiing, both classic and skate. The tracts and trail were absolutely fabtabulous. It was a beautiful day, sunny with moderate temperatures. There is a wonderful small wax room that we delightfully share with 2 other ski teams, BSF being the dominate team and getting whatever we want, what a surprise. We also had the privilege of having a time trial (or high intensity work out, according to senor Dragon Danevski, whatever). It was hard but there is no doubt about it we are extremely ready.
After our fabulous work we wondered to the Econo Mart grocery store. There we binged on interesting foods, mostly food that do not inquire refrigeration or does not need a microwave, for we have one microwave and a small fridge in the room taken over by Casey, Erica, and Kate. We now own all the food need for a week. Lunch included lovely American meals of Fried chicken, mash potatoes and delightful macaroni and cheese, Lander Karath. Soon as we arrive home to our lovely Travelodge five star sweats, we were all locked in our individual rooms and forced to do homework. Because we are such diligent students we obeyed. Yes Mom and Dad I am studying, why not. Dinner consisted of various foods within our rooms that we had earlier bought. So in other words we were stranded and left to die by ourselves during supper time.
As I sit here writing this and watching Bourne Supremacy I would like to sum up, this is a total party and we are having a blast. Oohh and we are super psyched about our epic upcoming races. Thank you for reading our update and we will be in touch, but for now this is Katie Gill reporting live from beautiful Houghton, Michigan.

Senior Nationals update 1
Sun Dec 30, 02:33 PM
by Timothy M. Weston
By now you’ve probably heard we made it here safe and sound (yesterday). The drive was a bit slower and longer than anticipated, but unhindered. I didn’t realize that the UP of Michigan is in the Eastern timezone, so we arrived an hour later than expected.
This morning we were at the venue, which was just swamped with athletes, coaches, and volunteers. The conditions are excellent — plenty of base, cool temperatures, and the sun was even shining! Who says the Mideast and Fareast aren’t nice places to visit?
I’ve got a couple of photos from today that I’ll try to get on this site later. We’re off to a coaches meeting for now.
Also, our plan is to have the athletes write some updates on here throughout the week, so stay tuned for those.

IMD, USSA, FIS License Information
Wed Dec 5, 10:10 AM
by Timothy M. Weston
Every year, as race season approaches, the coaches field a lot of questions regarding licenses. This is a tricky subject, especially for athletes and families that are new to the program. It would be easiest to say don’t ask questions, buy all of the licenses, and FUHGEDDABOUTIT! To keep costs down, we only recommend certain licenses for certain athletes. The intent of this document is to describe the 3 types of licenses, what purpose each license serves, and which license(s) you need for the coming winter.
Hard copy available here.

Thanksgiving photos
Thu Nov 22, 10:43 AM
by Timothy M. Weston
Happy Thanksgiving!
It certainly is cold down here in the mornings, but that is nothing new. This morning we did an easy skate ski with plenty of technique work and some pickups. The kids have this afternoon off, and tomorrow are the first SuperTour sprint races of the season — a couple of athletes will race and the rest will have an opportunity to watch and learn from some of the fastest skiers in the country.

Sac Middle School Van
Mon Sep 3, 02:47 PM
by Timothy M. Weston
To the families with kids at Sac, here is my policy regarding pick-up:
Van departure from Sac Middle School happens at 3:35pm. Kids should meet along the sidewalk on the North side of the school (not the bus loop). I usually only stay in the lot long enough to get everyone loaded into the van, so please be on time.
