BSF Youth Ski League News and Information:

Dear YSL parents,

· Tue Jan 6, 10:18 AM by Erich Pessl

Dear YSL parents,

We are so glad that your child is registered for Nordic skiing lessons this winter. We have had a great start to our ski season so far and we look forward to continuing that with your child this year.

The first Saturday session is Jan. 10th at Bohart. The first Wednesday session is Jan. 14th at Lindley Park. Remember for Wednesday sessions, we meet at the parking lot east of Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, not at the Lindley Center. Please arrive early enough to have your child in his/her skis ready to go at 4pm for Wed. session (10am for Saturday session). We will have the kids back at the same site at 5:15pm on Wednesdays, 11:30am on Saturdays.

Remember to give your child something to eat and drink before their session, as that may determine whether they are able to stay warm and have the energy to enjoy the day. It’s also helpful if they go to the bathroom before arrival. We will cancel the session if the temperature is below 10F degrees at the start time. We will not send out a notice about this, as temperatures can change quickly, so watch your thermometer on colder days.

This year we will have 2 of the Wednesday sessions at the Bridger Creek Golf Course trails. These sessions will be during the month of February, dates to be determined. We will send out email confirmation of those dates as the time approaches.

We will teach all children classic ski technique during the various sessions. Waxless skis (with fish scales on the bottom) are the easiest ski to use for the youngest skiers.

Older children who are more experienced and would like to learn skate-skiing will need either “combi” skis (smooth-bottomed skis used for both classic and skate-skiing) or a dedicated skate ski, and a separate pair of classic skis. Your child’s coach may email you ahead of time to let you know whether to bring skate or classic skis on a particular day—or you may want to be prepared for either technique on a given day.

If your child has “combi” skis (rather than waxless), please provide them with “kick” wax for use on classic technique days. Also, after each class, clean the ski bottoms with wax remover in preparation for the following session when we may be teaching skate skiing. We will hold a waxing demonstration clinic on Monday, January 19th at the Lindley Center at 6pm for parents interested in learning basic waxing technique.

If you have a moment, please email Erich Pessl if your child is registered for the Wednesday session, or Dan Purpura for the Saturday group, with your child’s ski ability: beginner/intermediate, and whether she/he is interested in classic, skate-skiing, or both (epessl@aol.com, danpurpura@earthlink.net).

Throughout the season, we will be posting program updates periodically on the BSF website, www.bsfnordic.com. Click on “news” on the left side of the page, then “YSL“at the top right side of the page.

See you out on the trails!
