BSF Youth Ski League News and Information:

2008 YOUTH SKI LEAGUE

· Mon Oct 8, 08:58 AM by Kristen Westesen

Hello Skiers—

The recent snow fall was perfectly timed with the upcoming enrollment for BSF Nordic and Youth Ski League (YSL). With the return of growing numbers of young skiers from last year and great new trails added on National Forest Service land, everyone is looking forward to fueling the Nordic skiing fire in the Bozeman area this winter.

Sign-up night for BSF competitive programs and YSL (non-competitive lessons for 5-12 year olds) is next week (October 17, 7pm, Bozeman Public Library). We are not only looking forward to signing up interested children for the programs, but we are also looking for interested adults to help as instructors for the YSL program. The higher the instructor-child ratio, the better experience the children will have.

Nordic racing experience is not necessary to be a good instructor for this age group of children—enthusiasm is what counts. Most instructors will be paired with another instructor during lessons (so the kids shouldn’t be able to pin you down and torture you). We will provide an instructor orientation session at 4pm Wednesday, January 2, at the Lindley Center (not the upper hospital parking lot). We will meet inside the Lindley Center, then move outside for a brief snow orientation. We will also provide a lesson booklet with simple games used to teach children age-appropriate skills.

The time commitment is for 1½ hours per week for 7 weeks from January 5th through February 21st. The specific days of week are yet to be determined, but usually are Wednesdays 4-5:15pm at Lindley Park or Saturday 10-11:30am at Bohart. If you have a volunteer obligation for older children in BSF, 10 hours of this time can be applied to that commitment. You do not need to have children in YSL to volunteer. If you do have children in the YSL program, your registration fee for them will be waived if you are an instructor.

There will be a sign-up sheet for instructors at Sign-up Night on Oct. 17th. Additionally, you may email or call Erich Pessl about this at epessl@aol.com or 223-2267
