The John Colter Run
Dragan and Bjorn will be taking the vans to the race—leaving from the Swim Center @ 7:30 a.m. sharp and returning to the Swim Center after the race. For anyone driving, directions to the race start area are: go 3 miles east of Three Forks on I-90 at Three Forks exit, then east on Secondary 205, then 3 miles north on Secondary 286 to the Missouri River Headwaters State Park.
The J5/J4/J3 groups will run/hike/cheer for teammates along a shortened version of the course. They will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Trident Road and the Logan Trident Road (near the Holcim plant, north of the Missouri River Headwaters State Park), and will end at the race finish area after the race.
The J2/J1/OJ groups will run the course. Race start time is 9:00 a.m. so if you don’t ride the van, be there in time to warm up before the race start.
All groups will end at the race finish area in the Missouri River Headwaters State Park after the race. For those of you who haven’t done this race before, it ends with a river crossing, so remember to bring extra/dry clothes for the return trip home.

Thanks and Good Luck
Mon Aug 18, 04:53 PM
by Timothy M. Weston
Now that I’m packed and ready to leave (thankfully all my stuff does fit into the Subi!), I want to say thanks to everybody one last time. BSF has been a great part of my life for the past several years. Thanks to all the athletes, parents, coaches, volunteers, and supporters that help to make the organization what it is.
To the kids: I want to wish you best of luck in and out of sport. Keep up all the hard work and you won’t even need the luck! And try to enjoy the ride as much as possible. I hope skiing has been a positive part of your life, and that it remains with you for a long time to come. I’ve got a lot of good memories, plenty of humorous memories, and even a few sad ones. They are all there, and they all include you guys, and I won’t lose them.
To the parents: Thanks for the support, opening your homes, driving your kids to practice. I got to know some of you more than others, but by and large the experiences were positive. BSF is not just coaches and athletes — you are a significant part of the group and help keep it running smoothly. Thanks for all the letters of encouragement, and for the funding to buy my new bread machine when I get to Vermont!
I will keep the same email address, and I believe my cell # will stay the same. If/when any of you make it out East, please drop me a line. And if you know of skiers that want to spend some time in VT, I think I might know a guy…
I’m trying not to get too sentimental, but I have to at least show y’all the new paint job on my helmet. Mellie Park painted it a couple years back — pink with flowers. The new artwork was done by Natalie Flowers et al.
.
A can of Red Bull on the front:

.
A donut and the NY Yankees logo on the top:

.
And finally:

All the best BSF,
//Tim Weston

Canmore update
Fri Aug 8, 10:21 PM
by Timothy M. Weston
What day is it again? I think it is Friday, since the Olympics started today. We’ve got CBC up here, which means we should get to watch a lot of the good stuff.
Since the last update, we had an easy Thursday morning which included a few hours of shopping and relaxing in downtown Canmore. In the afternoon, we traveled to Banff to do a “surprise” workout. Now I’ve only been with BSF for a couple of years, but one thing I’ve noticed is that whenever Dragan calls a workout a ‘surprise’, it usually seems to mean ‘time-trial’. Not to disappoint, the pattern continued. Some of the athletes had a hard time believing that we were serious about doing a time trial. You’d think that they would have picked up on it by now — at least the older kids! “Surprise” = “time-trial”. Now the cat is finally out of the bag.
The time-trial was at a big tourist destination — a moderate sized mountain (~7500’) just a mile or so from downtown Banff. A gondola runs up to the summit, where one can see 360’ views of the mountains and valleys all around the area. I rode the gondola up so that I could record finish times. As I purchased my round-trip ticket, I asked about one-way tickets so the kids could ride down after a hard workout. This was around 4:45pm. The lady said something like, “well, if you leave now, it usually takes about 1.5 – 2 hours to hike up. By that time, it is free to ride the gondola down.” I informed her that I wasn’t hiking up myself, but the kids that were would not need a couple of hours to ascend 2400’ over ~5.6km.
The workout/time-trial went very well. Times were anywhere from 35 to 51 minutes. J2’s simply went as far as they could in 45’, which turned out to be all the way to the summit for many. The J3’s went for 30 minutes, and stayed right with the older kids for that length of time. Some of the tourists were very impressed and cheered for the kids as the finished.
Last night, we went in to town to support Dairy Queen. They were giving all proceeds from sales of their Blizzard™ to Children’s Hospitals or something.
Today we started with an easy run from the condos. We are bringing radios and bear-spray along on the workouts out in the woods, and we are glad that we haven’t had to do anything beyond testing the sprays.
Midday we went on another grocery run, and ran into the Bozeman Climbing Team in the parking lot. Small world.
This afternoon was our first session on skate skis, again just low intensity, beginning from the condos.
Kate and Erika (wo)manned the grill for us this evening, despite a bit of rain and thunder and lightning. Lots more to eat, more cake, more nutella, more coca-cola, and the opening ceremonies are finally over so now we get to watch the Olympics!
Tomorrow, we’re back to the grind with a skate workout at the Nordic Centre, followed by easy jogging in the afternoon. Stay tuned for more…red leader out.

Canmore Update
Wed Aug 6, 10:12 PM
by Timothy M. Weston
So we’re 3.5 days along now. Monday was a classic ski in the AM followed by easy jogging around town in the PM. Yesterday, we began our workout in Banff and ran an out-and-back trail towards Canmore. The J1/OJ athletes were out a little longer than anticipated, but they managed to run all the way to the Canmore Nordic Centre and back. That works out to about 28+km of running. A good solid 3.5 hour run! I heard some of the athletes say they burned 3000+ calories during that workout, as estimated by the heart-rate-monitors. J2’s and J3’s ran on the same trail, but we cut the workout “short” — at the 2.5 – 2.75 hour mark.
Yesterday PM we played some games in town, alternating between soccer, basketball and volleyball. I don’t think we have any future W/NBA stars in our midst. Sorry parents.
Today was Maggie Goertzen’s birthday. Happy BDay! The older athletes completed a long classic rollerski at the Nordic Centre again. J2 and J3’s worked with Kristen and me for about 2 hours, focusing on technique. Just about everybody is improving already. Today was a great day with a nice blue sky and temps a bit warmer than the past few days. We got a bunch of photos of the J2/3 groups upon completion of the workout.
This PM we went to our favorite local watering hole (not that kind, parents), Minnewanka Lake for some swimming and rope-swinging. Again, lots more photos. A team-meeting and video session followed by birthday cake rounded out the evening. I’m bushed and headed for bed.
Regarding photos, my wireless signal is very weak, and I’m having problems uploading them. But don’t worry, we are getting plenty of em.
Other than putting up with the musical preferences of a few athletes, I’d say camp is off to a good start.

1 Workout Down, 18 To Go
Mon Aug 4, 03:46 PM
by Timothy M. Weston
I believe we have 9 “rookies” on this trip, as well as 20 “veterans” and 3 coaches. We all are enjoying the beauty of the Canadian Rockies thus far. Here is a photo that sorta sums up the area:

This picture was taken in the parking lot at the Canmore Nordic Centre, looking towards the stadium area. About 20 meters from where I took the photo, is the beginning of ~5km of paved trails where we rollerski. Since we are living all the way on the outskirts of Canmore, we have to drive a whopping 3-4 miles to get to the venue.
As you can see in the photo, this town takes nordic skiing seriously. We passed 2 groups of skiers out on the road this AM as we drove to train. Then there were another 6-8 biathletes training at the same time we did. And on the drive home? You guessed it, a couple more skiers on the paths. It is awesome to be in a community like this, and to be around other serious athletes.
The new accommodations are nice. We even have wireless. All the kids are eating well, and our grand total at the grocery store (2 trips already) is up around $750! That should get us through, oh about tomorrow…!
